Jan Kuijken (1964 , Bruges) is a composer and cellist.
As a composer he specializes in creating music for theatre – and dance -performances.

His compositions have been performed by highly regarded ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Ghent, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie (OCRW), the Symphony Orchestra of the Flemish opera (VLOS), Cello8ctet Amsterdam, Silbersee (vocaallab) and Oxalys.

He has frequently collaborated with iconic figures in the theatre world such as Josse De Pauw and Marlies Heuer.

In addition, he writes music for film – his composition for the film “Tristitia“ was awarded the “Prix SACD de la musique d’une video choregraphie“ in Paris in 1992.

Simultaneously, he focuses specially on chamber music compositions and vocal music, works that have been performed by the Danel Quartet, Quadro String Quartet, Akhtamar Quartet, Spilliaert trio and Ictus.

As a cellist he was active in very diverse ensembles and projects, in an eclectic combination of musical styles. He has worked with Fabrizio Cassol, Kris Defoort, Peter Vermeersch, Daniel Dennis, Trevor Watts…

He frequently performs his compositions as live accompagnement in theatre- and dance -pieces in international venues such as Festival d’ Avignon, Tanec Praha, Santiago a Mil International Festival, Le Printemps des comédiens (Montpellier) , Festival van Vlaanderen, Juni Dans Amsterdam, Theatro del canal Madrid, MilaOltre (Milan), Zeeland Nazomer Festival…
